Vertex supplies Mike Bullard on Global TV

Vertex is very pleased to announce that we have been selected by Canwest Global Television as pro-audio equipment suppliers for the new launch of the Mike Bullard Show on the Canwest Global Television Network.

The Mike Bullard Show (now entering it's 6th season), changed networks this year, and in so doing, moved to a new studio located at 98 The Esplanade, in downtown Toronto. The space accommodates both studio performance areas and audience seating for approximately 150 guests of the show. The studio space is completed by numerous dressing rooms, offices, tech service areas, etc. Vertex has had a very good relationship with Global Television over the years, having previously worked together on many live broadcast events, so it was a natural progression for Global to contact us when it came time to select a quality audio production installer for the new studio. For Vertex, this installation was a challenge we were very excited to be invited to undertake.

The new studio required a completely new installation of high-specification audio equipment, from microphone kits to multiple large format mixing consoles, including monitor and FOH speaker systems, in-ear monitor systems, and an extensive complement of wireless equipment. Additionally, we were under a great deal of pressure due to the show's short timeline for the installation process. In the end, the job was completed on time, and on budget.

Shooting live to tape on a show of this type requires that live performance audio mixing be done in one take, with an absolute minimum of resetting, and without permitting any compromise in audio quality. The Mike Bullard Show has had a reputation for excellent broadcast audio quality for many years, and Global was adamant that this level of audio quality be maintained throughout the new installation, yet keeping cost levels to a reasonable level. The system we have supplied has drawn rave reviews from both in-house guests as well as the home viewing audience since the show debuted on Global in November of 2003, and the show's operators have been quite pleased as well.

The FOH audio system is built around JBL Array Series speaker systems, using a center cluster as well as delay fills and subwoofers to cover the audience seating area. Additional small-format speaker systems provide local fill for Mike's desk and monologue positions. The FOH console is an Allen & Heath
ML-4000 mixer featuring a total of 80 inputs, along with an extensive array of FOH equipment including effects devices from Lexicon, Yamaha and Roland, Drawmer and BSS comps and gates, Ashly Protea digital equalizers, Shure DFR-11 digital anti-feedback unit, QSC, Crest and Ashly power amplifiers. The FOH engineer mixes all inputs from all sources - House band, Guest band, over 20 wireless microphones, multiple VTR and other video sound feeds. All of these sources are fed from this position to the studio audience sound system, as well as to the house band's in-ear monitors and the local fill speaker systems. Check it out - the house band's performance set even features multiple "bass shakers" installed into the floor of the set to provide more realistic bass feel to the musician's in-ear monitors!
